Patient profile:

This 23-year-old diabetic woman suffered from Stage IV avascular necrosis of the femoral head of the left hip which was progressing to Stage V. She developed severe pain all the time, which necessitated the use of crutches to minimize her weight-bearing pain.

Pre-operative diagnosis:

Stage IV decompensating avascular necrosis secondary to steriod therapy, status post renal transplantation

Surgical treatment:

Resurfacing total hip replacement

Surgical Outcome:

The patient returned to normal walking function with complete relief of her pain within six months.
